On Christmas Eve 1999, Nick Marshall, who had at the time a successful business as a freelance bookseller's representative, had two strokes, which left him incapable of speech. As a result, he was unable to continue his business, which he handed over to his brother.
After recuperation, a friend suggested that Nick might like to attend a Hove art school to help pass the time. This he did one day a week, and he now says that his experiences there gave him a new direction in life and a different way of looking at things. Soon after this, Nick enrolled as a part time student at Brighton Art School - a student again at 52! Adding to the good news, his power of speech returned.
Since then, Nick Marshall has exhibited at the Discerning Eye exhibition (2006), in the Brighton Festival with well-known Brighton artist Nick Orsborn, and also at the city's Christmas exhibition. His works have also been shown at the Camelford Gallery, the Red Biddy gallery in Shalford, the Apple Gallery in Godalming, in Petworth, West Sussex, and at other places too.
Nick takes many of his cues from his experiences in Spain where, for many years, he had a house. Many of his paintings reflect the scorched plains.
