My work grows out of finding sanctuary in nature—through process, through observing the seasons, and through connection with natural places. Working in oil, watercolor, ink, and acrylic mediums, I revel in experimentation within observation. Creation exists outside of words and beyond rational, logical thinking. Instead, it feels closer to free association—a kind of harmonious irrationality. My practice is a way to combat negativity, to send out peace and positivity, and to build resilience. Creating in nature generates the strength needed to persevere and to live with an open heart.
As the daughter of a painter and an actor (Karen Thibodeau), creativity was intertwined with early life for Nicole Thibodeau. She painted her way through a BA in Studio Art (Bethany College) and a MFA (Fort Hays State University). Further studies took her to the Art Students League (New York), Studio Art Centers International (Italy), and Lacoste School of the Arts (France). Currently, she lives in Taos, New Mexico where she paints outside with the Taos Plein Air Painters and meets up with fellow artists in the Taos Artisan's Guild.
