I am Nika Mtwana (b. 1991), a self-taught painter and visual artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. My work draws on Afrofuturism, science fiction, and African cultural identity to reimagine Black portraiture as both spiritual and sovereign.
Through richly layered oil and acrylic paintings, I portray figures adorned in futuristic symbolism, ancestral elements, and cosmic energy — each one a guardian of identity and inner power. My art seeks to elevate African narratives beyond time, space, and colonial imagination.
I’ve exhibited internationally, including solo and group shows in Los Angeles, and collaborated on high-profile projects such as the Disney x Balmain Afrofuturism collection. My work has been featured in JUXTAPOZ, LA Weekly, and African Digital Art.
Self-taught artist with a background in design and cultural storytelling.
