Pam Weinstock's work is rooted in a playful exploration of femininity. Shot against a background of London and New York skylines, the English countryside, Paris parks and Tuscan orchards, from women in ball gowns to headless rows of corybantic, gartered thighs, Pam captures moments of intimacy and abandon in the three photographic series from which this, her first solo exhibition, is drawn.
Delighting in unexpected contrasts and juxtapositions, the artist subverts her own carefully staged shots that reflect a background in fashion photography: women in ball gowns are caught off guard, checking a hem or considering their reflections in the looking glass of a hotel corridor, whilst an elegant portrait of a woman in a hat, evoking an early Cecil Beaton portrait, is given a whimsical twist as the sitter seems to walk out of the composition, leaving a stone lion as the surprised and surprising subject. The series of burlesque figures is partly provocative and partly mischievously humorous, as several of the protagonists take a break from seductive posing to play golf in the bathroom.
