Patrice Dworkin is a self-taught artist, working primarily in mixed media on paper. In her process, washes of tone or color are elevated by intricate line drawing. Compositions that begin in two dimensions often rise to three, and translucency and layering are key. Though frequently abstract, her “imaginary maps” take on the appearance of topography, reflecting a narrative quality that echoes the artist’s interest
in storytelling, printmaking, and handmade books.
She is strongly influenced by her environment and an acute sense of place, as well as her abiding curiosity about new methods and materials. The memory of a single
statement by the artist Franklyn Liegel has endured for decades: “Sometimes you have to draw what you see with your eyes closed.”
Patrice was born in Boston, MA. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University, and an MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. A career in advertising in New York City led to the full-time pursuit of art making. She has lived in California for three decades, currently living and working in Los Angeles.
