Patricia Frischer, born Kansas City, 1948, is a graduate of the California College of Arts and Crafts (MFA). She is a lecturer, instructor, and author of a book, The Artist in the Marketplace. She was head of an international art department in Nottinghill Gate in London as well as assistant professor of Art at Humboldt State University. She was a board member of the Combined Organizations for Visual Arts in San Diego where she coordinated the region wide Open Studios Tours and the Collectors Round Table panel discussions. Ms. Frischer now trains artist agents, dearlers and consultants and is presently the coordinator of the San Diego Visual Arts Network (www.SDVisualArts.net) which publishes the SmART Collector feature. Her own work has been shown internationally and her most recent one person show was at Oxford University.
Patricia Frischer has a highly recognisable style that is unique and is a reflection of how she would like to be perceived. She calls the work neo-narrative as it has recognisable elements but also a degree of abstraction. The work tells a story but in a non-linear way. Her subject dictates the way she uses her particular painting tools. This makes it intriguing for people to try to figure out which of the mediums she is using. She has long worked in gouache and neocolour (a water soluble wax stick) but the computer and digital techniques play a big part in her compositional studies. Frischer starts with something, which she notices, that might be considered quite commonplace. She uses her strengths, which are colour and vision to make an expression that attracts the viewer into the work. The pieces can be calming or stimulating, occasionally even startling but always offer an experience to the collector much as theatre does. After 25 years in London and ten years living there and in San Diego with an extensive global record of exhibitions, the works remain alarmingly literal, wittily verbal, surreally funny, flagrantly person, daringly fun and always mysterious.
