Nonna Pidvalna

My artistic practice operates at the intersection of past and present, inner and outer, symbolic and literal, engaging these oppositions in a productive dialogue. My works emerge from personal experience of integration into a different cultural environment, a journey I understand as a process of internal reconfiguration and the search for wholeness.

Grounded in deep respect for cultural memory and folk creativity, I explore the inner monologue of the contemporary individual through an examination of inherited cultural codes and the external pressures of present-day reality.

I do not reconstruct traditions, nor do I archive memory. I am interested in the moment when they generate a new visual and conceptual layer.

I do not seek silence as the absence of form or color. On the contrary, my works are vivid, saturated, and rhythmic, because life itself is layered and intense. The harmony of lines and fields of color forms a pattern of a dense, dynamic world filled with color, movement, and constant transformation. The symbolism of simple forms, ornament, repetition, mosaic structures, and pure color functions as a language of focused attention and as a means of sustaining energy.

Nonna Pidvalna is an American artist of Ukrainian origin. She has lived and worked in New York since 2011.

In her practice, she combines elements of Ukrainian folk tradition with a contemporary visual language. Having grown up in a cultural environment where ornament and handcraft were integral to everyday visual life, she approaches folk art not as decoration, but as a resilient system of signs, rhythms, and structures.

Her experience of immigration, life in New York, and immersion in a multilingual cultural landscape have shaped her sensitivity to space, composition, and visual discipline. Pidvalna’s artistic method developed through both independent studio practice and training in art workshops and international programs (to be specified).

Since 2025, Samchykivka folk painting has become a central element of her practice, reinterpreted as a language of memory and inner balance. In her work, ornamental structures function as visual principles of stability and meditative focus.

Between 2018 and 2020, Nonna Pidvalna actively participated in exhibitions in New York, New Jersey, and Long Island, and became a member of several art communities. Her works are held in private collections in the United States and Europe.
