Andrey Poletaev

Andrey Poletaev is an award-winning fine artist and one of the world's foremost practitioners of ballpoint pen art — a discipline he helped elevate from novelty to recognised fine art medium.

Working primarily in monochrome, Poletaev creates photorealistic works of extraordinary technical complexity. His ballpoint pen drawings are executed entirely by hand — no digital tools, no shortcuts — with a level of detail that challenges the boundary between drawing and photography. Every bolt, every body line, every shadow is built up through thousands of individual strokes.

Poletaev's body of work spans multiple mediums and subjects. His earlier works include oils on canvas and mixed technique pieces combining watercolour, pencil and ballpoint pen. His subjects have ranged from iconic Hollywood portraits and dramatic cityscapes to his current signature focus — iconic machines. Classic and modern automobiles, military vehicles, warships, aircraft and naval vessels rendered in obsessive pencil and ballpoint pen detail.

He is currently developing a new series of colour pencil drawings of early 20th century automobiles.
