Prettyblackhousewife merges competing western ideas as a statement and a lifestyle. Pretty black has long been seen as polar opposite ideas. Much like the artist of the négritude movement, pretty is as much a reflection of physical appearance as social acceptance and respectability. Even as tradition has exclaimed that black is ugly, brutal, and unacceptable when it comes to respectability. Black also addresses the pan-African themes and realities that exist for each person of the diaspora.

Housewife pulls on the idea that black femininity exists. Those black women can be housewives. That strength that flows from each black woman doesn't have to be illustrated as butch but has softness.


In normalizing these competing ideas, I bring an up-scale brand of art to luxurious homes. My work brings forms from chaos but never fully evacuating them from that reality. That turbulence is brought to the calm luxurious homes as the finality to the completing ideas which Prettyblackhousewife emerges.
