A Tribute to the Mother Tree Paper collage created as a tribute to the Mother Tree and a recognition of our fundamental interconnectedness. Series of three. I've chosen a collection of recycled papers like maps and circuit diagrams and I've painted paper to resemble bark and wood in various ways, there are also dropcloths included (the pieces of paper that cover my worksurface when I paint) and a recycled paper bag too. The perspective from the foot of a tree (should you assume the tree hugging position) is very different than when you view a tree from a distance, and this upward, intimate view is what I've chosen for this image. The bare, deforrested paper-bag hillside in the background is a sad reminder of just how little old growth forest remains for us to protect. It's a heartbreaking sight. In BC in 2021 there were a series of record breaking weather events, draught, heatwave, floods, and the connection to the damage we've done to our natural environment is getting much harder to ignore. The degree to which we depend on trees should be clearer all the time, and the ways in which our health and theirs are interconnected needs to be better understood. It is my hope that this image can help bring awareness to the need to save our old growth forests, and protect our natural environment. And encourage tree-hugging... it's a real thing! I'd like to give credit to two sources of inspiration for this work: The Sierra Club of BC drawing class UBC Professor Suzanne Simard's Book 'Finding the Mother Tree'

Born in Toronto Ontario, I'm now fortunate enough to live on the west coast of Canada, and I'm completely in love with the natural environment around me. While my art is seldom a literal representation of my landscape, the natural world I walk through informs the textures, lines and colours in my work. I'm presenting a series of animal silhouette images, of Canadian wildlife, mostly west coast creatures, including Elk, Bear, Orca, Starfish, Deer, Bison, Beaver, Salmon and Cod. This series of silhouettes will be developed in a variety of medium, the 'Dropcloth' series uses backgrounds created using the paper that covers my work surface when I paint, and the 'Maps' series uses old paper maps used for motorcycle touring in Canada. The Pen and Ink series explores using black lines to define positive and negative space of animal silhouettes, by using lines represent textures of plants and also to outline the shapes of animals. The animal silhouette series has expanded to include trees and clouds, so the creatures have an environment. In 2024 I'm expanding my offerings with paintings as well as collages and drawings.
