About The Artwork

Swan-maidens " Some blue peaks in the distance rose. And white against the cold-white sky Shone out their crowning snows." Its solitary habits, the purity of its feathers, its wondrous song, have given to the wild swan a charm which has endeared it to poets, and ensure its introduction into mythology. The ancient Indians, looking up at the sky over which coursed the white cirrus clouds, fabled of a heavenly lake in which bathed the swan-like Apsaras, impersonifications of these delicate light cloud-flakes. What these white vapours were, the ancient Aryans could not understand ; therefore, because they bore a more or less remote resemblance to swans floating on blue waters, they supposed them to be divine beings partaking of the nature and appearance of these beautiful birds. CURIOUS MYTHS OF THE MIDDLE AGES. BY S. BARING-GOULD In the new work Brunhildr, as in this entire series, Scandinavian heroes and their embodiment are intertwined, but not only. Valkyries in Scandinavian myths had the images of beautiful swan maidens who watched the battle from heaven and held the fate of mankind in their hands. The most famous of them, Sigrdriva or Brünnhilde, perishes of love and deceit. The most famous swan from the ballet "Swan Lake" suffers the same fate. And the name of the beloved in both stories is Siegfried. This is how these stories were linked in my painting.
