ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I began creating my collages in 2017 and the idea has slowly developed over time. The collages are created by layering a variety of paper including tracing paper, vellum, Japanese paper, painted paper, Thai paper, Nepalese paper, and pages from antique books. The base of each work is part of an antique player piano roll which creates the lines and dots in the collages. I look at these lines and dots as a code, or more of an early technology and coding, like Morse Code. These codes encrypted in the antique paper creates a relationship between the past and today. The image on the player piano roll paper is an abstract landscape or cityscape, drawing the connection between the nature that we live in and the codes behind our technological world. I also really enjoy playing with the colors and transparencies in each one of my collages, trying to create interesting overlaps of shape and color. All collages are mounted on an 8"x 10" linen sheet of paper. This specific collage was created in 2019.

Art is a means of exploration and experimentation for me. Art is my passion as well as art education and I am thankful that I am able to pursue both by working as a high school art teacher and an artist. I enjoy working with a wide variety of color, texture, and transparencies to create expressive landscapes. Nature has always been my number one inspiration and motive when creating. My color choices are vibrant and diverse, creating the abstraction and imagination in the paintings. As an art teacher, I am able to see my students ideas and stories in the classroom. Their ideas inspire me everyday and bring me so much happiness. It is so fun and motivating to see their creativity. For three years, I worked as an artist assistant for a well known St. Louis artist. I was able to learn so much from the studio and always left inspired by her artwork.
