About the Artist

Magda Rachwal

United States

I am an interdisciplinary artist and I embrace a new project with a curiosity of a child; I know nothing but I am capable of knowing everything and with that “I don’t want to destroy anything but I want to know what I can destroy”(Bill Callahan). I am a keen observer of overlooked moments. My artwork consists mostly of illustration and photography. Applying these two processes I am able to explore my interest in fleeting moments and reflections on everyday life. Using mixed media in my illustration I tell a story sometimes autobiographical and sometimes fictional with elements of fantasy. Drawing allows me to create contradictions and distort everyday reality. By manipulating the lens in my camera I am able to get unexpected results and interventions into normal life. I capture experiences significant and insignificant during my trips abroad and life in Brooklyn. Impressions of daily life and people are elements that continue to appear in my work. Each day becomes a full force of visual stimulation that leaves lasting memories which inspire me to create a new piece or capture it on film. By staging images and using alternative processes I am transforming the random grists of my life into meaningful stories.
