About The Artwork

This work is an assemblage of recipe cards, hand-drawn fruit motifs on tracing paper, measuring tape, butcher paper, and sewing patterns that came from a woman named May Nelson. May was in her 80s when I met her; she was my next door neighbor when I was a child and then, when she moved into an assisted living facility, our family bought her home. She had lived through the depression and was an unrepentant pack rat- she saved everything! Somehow, after growing up, moving around the country and having my own apartment, then family, I found that I had in my possession many of May's "un-partables". Now I was unable to dispose of her treasured scraps of colored cellophane, old wrapping paper, her heavy box of recipes, or her envelopes full of fruit-themed embroidery motifs. These things needed to come together to embody May, but also, to be a sort of archaeology, at lease a topsoil, of a woman from her era. At best, I hope it can be a meditation on what we leave behind.

From childhood I can remember the feeling of being compelled to draw- I heeded this urge just as I did the sensation of hunger or thirst. That pure and direct drive to create becomes dulled through the advance of years and the "necessities of adulthood". But I think the creative urge, in its many forms, remains as necessary as our biological needs, despite our incapacity to fully understand or give credence to it. I seek to honor this urge by eroding my own resistance to it and allowing that direct relationship between impulse and action to exist again. As humans, we begin drawing before we are even literate. This is true collectively as well as individually. We understand the world through drawing and we think as well as communicate to others through drawing. It's a tool used by all of us. I endeavor to create a figural representation of the abstract in my work. Like Rene Magritte, who considered himself a thinker before an artist, I am a thinker whose medium is drawing, painting, collage. I hope my art speaks to you.
