ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Intricate patterns demonstrate the interconnectedness between ourselves and the urban environment. Orange represents the the height of summer for me. I like to use vibrant colors because they appeal to my inner child, I like to have fun and bright colors catch peoples eyes. The colours also represents summertime for me. I love to experiment. The colours draw people into the work and then you can start to have a conversation about urban living and what that means for us and the planet that we are living on. What we can do to be more sustainable right now and into the future if we want our human habitat to survive.

Emerging artist Emmellee Rose combines many styles from photography and print making to creative use of paper and fabric to produce art showing humanity’s impact on the earth. She studied graphic design at the Art Institute in San Fransisco and is now focusing on her art practice.

Emmellee’s current work features two distinct styles. Photographs she has taken around the Otago Peninsula have been transferred by hand to canvas which in the process creates imperfections but also an otherworldly feel.

Emmellee’s Urban Series is both spontaneous and practiced, methodical, but not perfect. Imperfection is what makes us human, hence the work is cut by hand. Intricate patterns demonstrate the interconnectedness between ourselves and the urban environment.

She says “my goal is to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them and to discover beauty in unusual, unexpected places.”
