The image of a city in flames speaks of unrest and conflict, of wars and rumors of wars, of stresses so deep that violence seems to be the only available release. The skyline is not of one particular city, but of any city. We can keep the violence at a distance through wishful thinking, that is, by burying our heads in the sand, or by commitment to dialog. Created in 2015, originally titled "City in Flames," it was renamed the following year. This collage was inspired by the March 28, 2014 cover of Science magazine (volume 343, issue 6178), which was devoted to breast cancer research. It called to my mind the vulnerability of population centers to every type of disaster, and the disturbing trend of the current political climate. I used a pieces from that illustration along with others from my stockpiles to create this collage. Recycled paper on canvas board. The magazine clippings I use are de-acidified and buffered to prevent deterioration from any acidity that might have been originally in the paper. They are further encased in acrylic to prevent harmful exposure to the air, and coated with an ultraviolet light-scattering varnish to protect the inks from fading.

I first began working in collage when I wasn't to buy paints and canvas, but after trying other media I still find collage the most satisfying. I like the thought of turning ephemeral, mass-produced magazine images into something unique and lasting. There is a particular flow to certain curves that feels both right and compelling to me, like the sight of a road winding out of sight that beckons me to follow it. Curves appear prominently in my work because I want to take that road, to explore that line, wherever it leads.
