About The Artwork

“Personal Backlog” is an overly laboured list of the things entrepreneurs might do when striving for success. The piece includes nothing much about the business itself, rather this is about the business of being an entrepreneur and getting in shape to startup, grow and change the world. As the task of raising money and spinning-up a successful multi - sometimes billion- dollar business takes talent, courage, luck and a lot else besides. The art of becoming (and remaining) a founder can inspire many to seek the services of coaches, mentors, mindfulness gurus, image consultants, and personal trainers. This piece describes an imagined ‘backlog’ of tasks someone might need to do to ‘self improve’ It asks whether the entrepreneur is indeed strong, or a little vulnerable.

Having studied at Central Saint Martins in the early nineties, fascinated by how the early Internet was changing everything, I began working with Digital Media. As an early adopter - and someone who was professionally at the centre of this emerging landscape - I was exposed not just to the new technologies, but to new ways of working, communicating and selling in this brave new world.   I witnessed and helped to construct the emergence of social media, of blogging, of mobile; I *was* that person who first talked about spinning up businesses, co-working, going to unconferences; I hung out with the Web 2.0 kids in the mid 2000s.   Early attempts to develop digital ideas into businesses gave me an immersion into the creative world of startups and a culture of ideas and aspiration even more enigmatic and enclosed than the art world. My work draws from my diverse technology and business experiences; I explore the themes of digital content production and ownership, data, community engagement (real people on the Internet), money, ideas, power, and ambition. Visually, my art is punctuated by bold, poppy imagery, slogans and statements; as commentary on or challenge to the status quo. I don’t see myself as a digital artist; or even a “Post Internet Artist”; I’m a conceptual artist who might happen to work with digital technology or might happen to work online, but who might also work with paint or mixed media. I might also happen to work as an entrepreneur, and to create a business as readily as I might create an artwork.
