ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The work is part of a series exploring the idea of the natural world in its confrontation with the speed and consequence of human, industrial impact. Amorphous forms emerge and recede like organisms, mutating and evolving through layers of recycled trash in collage.

My current process explores ironies of meaning in a cluttered digital age, human sustainability in its relationship to nature, and the ephemera of a modern world. A background as a professional art director in TV advertising has had a strong influence in the work. Fascinated by the chaos of TV, film, print and social media, I see a human struggle to make sense of it all in an era of 'fake news'. The work explores nature, as an ancient form, our connection to it, and the denial of that connection in the current political scene, fighting ideas like climate change, and human accountability. Photo imagery of organisms - jellyfish, dragonflies, moths etc. - are a visual entry point into themes of ancient nature, some organisms considered 'living fossils'. Scientifically, all nature, humans, are inherently connected to a phylogenetic ‘family’ tree. All life, living and extinct, share some identical DNA, showing a universal connection. Homo sapiens, existing 200,000 plus years in contrast, are viewed accountable for nature’s fate itself, via climate change, pollution, species extinction etc. My practice investigates a connection and contrast between what is ancient and human, perhaps ephemeral, through mediums of recycled trash, graffiti and pop imagery - what’s left behind as in fossils.
