About The Artwork

Safe harbour in a fragmented world, represented is the hull of the HMS Himalaya, the ship a great-grandfather was born on as it brought his colonial parents from Canada to their new station in Cork. To be a pregnant woman on board a ship was very bad luck but to give birth to a son, usually on the gundeck (easier to sweep out) would break the curse, leading to the title “son of a gun” which to this day means “lucky bastard”. Interesting how ancient knowledge of unseen energies is co-opted by a deeply patriarchal and colonial situation. On board is the Tory Island lighthouse, painted by his descendants, my dad and grandfather, proud, kind, Gaelic men who prove that healing is possible. There’s also a garden with an abundance of fruit. The flag of Bangladesh has been appropriated to represent my generation, being a country whose topography is informed by powerful rivers that flow from the Himalayas but who’s culture is a composite of many beautiful influences.

Queer Irish artist based in Cork City, Ireland. My work investigates post-colonial legacies in the Irish psyche, that which we have yet to unpick, that which we have yet to remember, with particular attention to the vulnerable and marginalised. I make use of printmaking media to create my work, although also interested in pushing the boundaries of what this discipline entails.
