ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I started this Collage Painting with a canvas that had already been painted on. I used pieces of magazine pages and glued them in position to cover parts of the original painting. After the glue dried I "painted out" portions like magazine text and previously painted parts that didn't seem to fit the overall image. There is so much that is "hidden" and this seems to be a current theme in my work. We humans only let other people see what we allow them to see. We have so many secrets.

" Appropriation and defacement is a common thread in my work. Text, words and lettering are used for their visual power more than any literal definitions. In a sense I'm creating alternative narratives that suggests the precariousness of perception. The act of appropriating then destroying is a subversive act.
