ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In 1938 Cuban trumpeter Mario Bauza joined Cab Calloway’s Orchestra and persuaded Cab to hire fellow trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Then in 1947 while Gillespie was still forming his own big band, Bauza introduced him to the Cuban conga virtuoso Chano Pozo. Together they wrote the classic “Manteca,”and infused this revolutionary Afro-Cuban Jazz with highly danceable rhythms and harmonies. The image represents a time when Chano Pozo and his fellow musicians won first prize for a composition at the annual carnival held in Santiago de Cuba where art, music and Santeria still flourish.
