ABOUT THE ARTWORK

ABJECT: Degraded, outcast, miserable, vile, pitiable, worthless, despicable, groveling, fawning, squalid, base-minded, slavish, beggarly, servile, cringing, low, wretched, sordid. (honorable, dignified, eminent, exalted, esteemed, worthy, venerable, noble, princely, illustrious, independent, self-assertive, self-reliant, vain, arrogant, insolent, haughty) Each artwork in this collection is inspired by my love of philosophy and an enduring passion for learning. I'm fascinated by the intersection of art and technology, and how these fields can merge to transcend traditional boundaries. My work is influenced by the idea that art is a form of language; and through the manipulation of my personal photographs using artificial intelligence and digital painting tools, I aim to visually express complex linguistic concepts. I hope viewers will be drawn into a contemplative space where they question the nature of language, art, technology, and existence. My intention is to evoke curiosity and wonder about the ways in which art communicates ideas that go beyond words. By visually representing words from a thesaurus, I hope to challenge viewers to think about the relationship between language and visual representation, and how technology can play a role in this dialogue. I chose to work with digital tools and AI because they allow me to explore the boundaries of artistic creation in ways that traditional media cannot. The subject matter—words from a thesaurus—offers a structured yet flexible framework for creative expression, allowing each piece to be a unique exploration of a single concept; And, indeed part of the experiment is to parse out how Ai interprets words. My style blends the personal with the abstract and surreal, using photographs from my life as a foundation and transforming them into something that speaks to universal ideas. This approach aligns with my belief that art is both a personal journey and a universal language.

Josh Davila is a conceptual artist blending philosophy, technology, and digital art to explore the intersection of language and abstract forms. With a background in moral psychology and Kantian ethics, my work delves into the nuanced relationship between human thought and artificial intelligence. My current project, Synonyms & Antonyms, investigates AI’s interpretation of language through the manipulation of personal photographs and generative adversarial networks (GANs). Each piece in the collection represents a single word from a thesaurus, reflecting a dynamic collaboration between the artist and the AI. An early adopter of AI-assisted art, my creations aim to challenge perceptions of meaning, consciousness, and artistic collaboration in the digital age. I have coined the term "Experimental Surrealism" to account for the modern use of technology to advance the surrealist movement.
