This piece was partly inspired by Ghanaian-English Afro-rock band Osibisa’s “Woyaya”. The subject's shirt, adorned with Ghanaian symbols “Gye Nyame” (translates as “Except God”) and “Sankofa” (translates as “Go back and get it”), is a nod to the inspiration we draw from our history, and also an acknowledgement of the hand of God in our journey forward as a people. Combined, these symbols represent a divine reminder of where we are from, where we are going, and how we will get there. Which feeds into the piece's title. The title, “God’s Eyes”, took direct inspiration from the Bible verse Proverbs 5:21, which reads: “For a man's ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and He watches all his paths.”
