About The Artwork

The work is part of a series I started in 2020 with my maternal grandmother as the focal subject in the composition. Her image appears surrendered and engulfed in complex collage of Wax Prints and newsprint. The Process, though digital, was developed from a traditional collage technique of using residues of cutoff wax prints pasted by juxtaposing and superimposing the material and overlaying with lotto papers that have texts and additional Handwriting texts on them. Am I working in with the wax prints and lotto papers because the remind me of my maternal and paternal grandmothers. The collaging of the materials is a representation of my identity complexities. I wish to use these series as a starting point to investigate historical narratives around me.

Albert Nii Nortey Dowuona – alniinod (b. 1987) is an artist who lives and works in Accra, Ghana. He earned his BFA in Painting and Sculpture from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi in 2010. Nii Nortey explores materials that have with them “voices” or “narratives” where he employs them into his socio-political narrative. These materials come as everyday and already-made items. Some of the items he has explored on within his art practice include the potter’s wheel, fabric, newspapers, audio-visuals, and popular musical tunes in his works. Nii Nortey is currently exploring the idea of Social Identity and Authenticity where the “African-print fabric” becomes an allegory to comment on the complex nature of identity. The fabric’s history; its origin, production, designs, consumers, usage, representation and its brands create a narrative of mixed identity and authenticity.
