ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In my work, I try to communicate a range of ideas about the real or conceptual world through abstraction, impressionism, and symbology. Depending on the collection, I will use hand-drawn images, hand-written computer programs, or a combination of both approaches. Similar to using programs like Adobe Photoshop, I will often use Stable Diffusion (AI) to enhance and manipulate my hand-created images or the output of my hand-created programs to add watercolor, oil, and/or distortion effects. It is my hope that these works evoke thought and emotion; delight and inspire; and demonstrate the power and wonder of technology as an emerging artist’s tool. This piece is part of my landscape collection. In the landscape collection, I am attempting to create impressionist or pointillist landscapes using generative computer technology. To that end, I have written a series of P5 JavaScript programs that generate initial digital landscapes. Within each program, I manipulate the geometries, composition, and color palettes of the sky, trees, foreground, and background to produce unique images. The resulting images are then used as "image-to-image" guides in Stable Diffusion where I add watercolor or oil effects and vary the amount of abstraction. The Stable Diffusion output is transferred to Affinity Photo/Designer for retouching. The Affinity output is then upscaled to produce final high-resolution prints. To date, there are approximately 250 unique images in the collection and I have many ideas for additional pieces. At present, I am offering these works as an open edition digital print. Depending on interest, I may offer signed limited edition versions of each print in the future. A limited edition print would incorporate a 22"x22" image with a 1" white paper border around the image for a total size of 24"x24". Finally, please note that 50% of the artist's proceeds will be donated to a local art school in Canada.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in 1979 and have spent the last 45 years or so practicing graphic design, visual interaction design, user experience design, web design, software prototyping & development, and big data visualization for various corporations. Today, I spend my time creating hand-drawn images, generative computer-programmed images, and images that incorporate both approaches. I try to produce images that communicate a range of ideas through abstraction, impressionism, and symbology.
