ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I know this game. This is the job of philosophy. You know that a short time ago my editors asked me to write a special introduction to the new Penguin edition of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy because they knew that I’m a big fan and it would create some interest. So, you know what? Do you really think that Stieg Larsson would like my introduction? The introduction is against Larsson. It says, “Larsson was basically an expressionist writer, with all his cheap descriptions of physical extremity but in fact he’s very limited.” I did this on purpose. My idea is that you shouldn’t praise him, because if you praise him people read it and say, “But this guy definitely liked Larsson; he's one of us.

However, Whelan is finding his futuristic path into the light, away from these titans of the art world, his work constantly seeking to go beyond the discipline of representational art and the more gestural expressionism that we are familiar with in the figurative paintings of Bacon.
