VIEW IN MY ROOM
Hyeju Cho uses geometric patterns to represent the design of cities as she has experienced them on her feet, something we don't see all the time. The image of a city schematized on a flat surface reminds us that the real thing can be simpler and more beautiful. The countless dots and lines of the city, paralleled according to their own rules and rhythms, can be seen today like the veins of a leaf or the circuitry of a semiconductor. The juxtaposition of roads and buildings, cars and trees, blocks and intersections, in bright colors and shapes, are the patterns of the work. The juxtaposition of roads, buildings, cars, blocks, and intersections in bright colors and shapes makes us look up and take a look around. Maybe we're so busy living our lives that we don't even notice the small beauties around us. Maybe we've been so busy living our lives that we don't even recognize the small beauties around us. Isn't that what art is all about: constantly searching for the fun in everyday life and sharing the hidden meaning with those around you through your work? The artist beckons to the people standing in front of the painting. That it's within our power to add light and color to this city.

Beauty is everywhere. Whether you're riding a bus or walking down the street, if you look closely enough, you'll see geometric abstractions, minimalist elements that combine to create beautiful patterns. Finding and expressing those elements is a very fun process for me as an artist. It's so beautiful and fun to fill a city with patterns on a single sheet of paper, and when you take those images and create layers and layers of cut paper, it becomes another city. You can find a differently composed city on every single sheet of paper. I'm working on a series of illustrations and an artist book called Paper Village.
