Sometimes inspiration comes from serendipitous scientific accidents...enough so that the cultural landscape of the entire Western World may be touched by them... Old fine art was about representation, based in the absence of photography. The standard representation was of the elite; those who could pay to perpetuate their legacy and attempt at immortalisation of their status, as a proxy in service to their egos´ simplistic drives. Then came modern art, and its interaction with technology...in combination came new sacrements of serendipity. The conservative powers had a new threat to their hegemony: Inside yourself you could use a catalyst to discover new experiences, perspectives, and ways of thinking. They officially may have banned certain forms of mind manifestation, but the magic cat was already out of the bag...and the potential of the human mind was unlocked. Indeed, conservatism finds a synonym in immaturity. A simple no or yes in individuals and in society renders the self and the society it finds itself in failing to reach a nuanced and fuller potential. Thankfully, there have been many who have dared to push forth in great and unnecessarily legally dangerous projects. In accord, the retardation of individual and cultural development was largely unsuccessful. If there was one great influence in my work, and I would say for the majority of artists of our time - at a distal level - it has been the landscape of permission to explore and express yourself without the constraints of the moneyed and politically powerful. The subject matter became unconstrained and open to potential - the antithesis of the conservative ´no.´ With the serendipitous sacrament the landscape of permissive exploration could be supercharged. We have the ability to experience the unfathomably huge complexity and psychological power in each of ourselves. This is the power of experiential possibility in all of our emotional, perceptual and cognitive domains. Yes, this is not without dangers - especially in the face of the confusion and the ambiguity that stems from prohibition. However, the potential benefits are starting to be realised anew, and better yet, science is returning to grapple with some of the greatest catalysts of human experience once again. The renaissance is upon us once again. This is the end of cosmic censorship people! In freedom may you dance. If you can piece together what I have been talking to you about then kudos to you...Unfortunately, we still have further to go in freedom and cultural maturity, so my words will remain somewhat enigmatic to avoid being accused of explicit promotion. This piece was created as a homeage, and also as a limited and stylised depiction of certain experiences in my life that have been some of the most profound and valuable that I could possibly have imagined. On a more practical, method-focused level, this piece was based on extending some of the techniques and stylistic elements of my earlier pieces. The most proximal and primary reference for technique and style from which I drew compositional elements were my former piece; ´Shattergrative Withdrawal and Simultaneity Spiral.´ Both pieces share the micro-pointillism style, in which an original a pointillist matrix is drawn and then the tiny gaps are evened out with almost microscopic pen points. The pieces also share the ´electric line field´ technique (See details). The extension of my work in this specific piece can be found in the more complex, irregularly interwoven mandala design. Multiple orientations of the piece are possible, and I recommend framing the work to permit hanging at multiple angles for variation of visual effect. I

16 years dormant; In my new residence at the time of Santiago de Chile; I found myself lost and confused without work yet with time on my hands. By chance, I stumbled across a set of archival ink pens. My thoughts are still not clear as to exactly what compelled me to buy them beyond the comparatively cheap price against that of my homeland Australia. At my parents in laws´ house, somewhat on a whim, I decided to draw a few lines to compare some pens sizes… I had trained to be a research psychologist, but couldn’t see the wood for the trees (or the deadline for the real matter) and my thesis had been a disaster. At a loss, drawing has given me the outlet for the obsessive diligence to method and detail that I had hoped to express in a research career. Failure can provide new freedom, and failure can give you chains: May the freedom be to pursue my art, and the chains of perseveration to a tendency of rigour drive my endeavours forwards! Each piece is painstaking and long in generation. Each piece in some way incorporates an extension of the methodology of forms of my earlier pieces: a novel base design incorporating repetition, iteration, and extension. All of my currently presented works are in simple black and white due to a desire to master the fundamental variables of my methodology. A haste to colour may fail the future by virtue of an overwhelming interaction of untamed variables that could cause a failure to reign in the building blocks of this generational form. Austere yet expressive, my assertion is that these works will complement rather than overcome a room that they may adorn. May you find them interesting in themselves and contributing to your beloved and important places of living!
