Broken Down Print

This work has a black charcoal edge including the deckle edge and can be float matted or matted to crop out the edge however is desired. I made the work to be atmospheric in nature, when in the dead of winter, sometimes the snow will slightly melt and makes the scene hazy. This was an old broken down gas station in Ann Arbor, MI. It's probably demolished by now. This is one of my subjects I move toward, a way of showing something used up still has this quiet beauty about it. Using Charcoal and Conté allows me to put a bit of color in an otherwise desolate scene. I like the way that I can build up the marks like a mesh that encapsulates the objects in the scene and puts distance between foreground, middle and background. The shapes become somewhat recognizable through the web of marks. I think of the black edge as to be like the edges of a negative, as if I've taken a snapshot of it.
