About The Artwork

In Pauwels' version of “calender girls” she wanted to show the relativity of beauty and glamour. Her calender girls are not young and sexy. They are old and wasted but proud and not afraid to show the decay of their beauty, even mocking about it. She prefers to work on wooden panels because she puts on many layers of texture, and paint. Canvas would just not be strong enough to support the many sanding and scrubbing in between the layers. This piece consists of five panels measuring each one 40cm by 200cm. The work ships in a wooden crate and is ready to hang. Avoid hanging it in areas of high humidity and direct sunlight.

I was born in Dendermonde (1959) Belgium. In 2001 I started traveling through Spain and eventually settled in a small mountain village near Ronda, Andalusia, where I currently have my studio. My work is centered around silence and solitude. The ‘wall’ often features as the background of my images, always leaving an opening, inviting the viewer to look beyond their initial impression. I build these walls through different layers of paper, acrylics and oilpaint, hiding carefully chosen textmessages in between. My palette is intentionally restrained; I want to create an atmosphere in my work, and too many bright colors would generate a language that is not useful to me. My current paintings feature either extremely elongated, or minuscule figures in a minimalist environment. Those naked figures are merely symbols of the duality of human nature in its pure essence. The juxtaposition of these opposing, seemingly fragile figures within empty spaces - away from any unnecessary adornments - confirms my statement. My work has been awarded and published internationally and can be found in private, public and corporate collections throughout the world.
