ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This sketch of pointe shoes in soft, pastel tones pays tribute to the strength and resilience of the female form, celebrating the dedication and discipline required to master the art of ballet. It also acknowledges the societal norms and expectations that women still face today. In the ballet world, pointe shoes are essential for female dancers who have undergone extensive training to be able to dance on their toes. Beyond the technical aspect, pointe shoes represent critical elements of femininity, grace, and resilience. The symbolism of pointe shoes goes beyond dance itself, embodying the physical and emotional strength of the female body. The shoes force the ballerina to shift her center of gravity, using her toes to maintain balance. To perform the intricate movements, the entire body must be strong and limber, representing the dedication and discipline required to push oneself to new limits. Additionally, pointe shoes also have a cultural significance, serving as a symbol of female empowerment and the fight against societal norms and expectations. I want this series to serve as a thoughtful and insightful representation of this timeless symbol of feminine strength and artistry. Photo reference by Olha Ruskykh.

I’m Claudia Du XinZhu (新竹), a Chinese oil painting artist living and working in rural New Zealand. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts and love exploring the world. My passion for nature, culture and different forms of art eventually led me to Aotearoa - my creative home. I specialise in creating impasto semi-abstract landscape oil paintings and portraitures on paper. My art reflects my experiences and perception of the world. I draw inspiration from the natural beauty of New Zealand, my travels, the cultures I encounter, the people I meet, and the emotions I experience. Each artwork I create is an opportunity to experiment with colours, textures, and patterns, and to continue learning, growing, and pushing my artistic boundaries. As I travel and experience more of the world, I am increasingly convinced that despite our outward differences and diverse cultures, we're all connected at our core. It's precisely our differences and complexities that make the world so exhilarating. Through my work, I aim to inspire and connect with people. My goal is to convey movement, emotions, and tender moments rooted in memories, fostering a sense of connection and creating an evocative and pleasurable sensory experience for viewers. Ultimately, we're all part of the same dance. I hope my art can bring us closer together. I have showcased my artwork in various exhibitions within New Zealand and have had the privilege of being collected in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and China.
