View In My Room
In my visual research, post-human earth serves as a bridge of both my formal and conceptual concerns. In this work I pose explore the question, are we being good stewards of the Earth? This leads me to explore narratives of ecological and geopolitical calamities. I think about our place in the link of in the chain of events that lead to this post-human earth. Formally, I am interested in using abstraction to tell a story. I am interested in using muted color tones to and heavy layers of charcoal to bury the narrative. I see these drawings as topographical cross sections of the spaces I seek to explore. I begin my process by writing the narrative of the piece on the surface. This to me serves a spiritual cleansing makes the piece about the narrative. Next, I bury the story through in an of detritus of additive charcoal marks restrained by layers of paint. I am drawn to the fragility and flexibility of paper– it allows me to constrict and expand the image as needed.
