About The Artwork

This tribute to Lucian Freud's Frank Auerbach, 1975-6, and shows a man in distress, however he is not crying. This may be to highlight the toxic masculinity evident in today's society, where men feel try must suppress their natural reactions to trauma. Instead of shedding a tear, behaviour associated with distress, we see the subcutaneous muscles, highlighted by the darker pencil grade, on his brow twisted in an almost agony. It is a suppression which may return these feelings in monsterous form, causeing himself and his relations to others harm.
