This work was inspired by the story of Baba Yaga, an Eastern European fairy tale that my Polish mother used to tell to scare me into behaving. The bird woman in this image is finally taking flight, leaving her home of origin/safety of the earth to find her potential, contradicting those who would keep her bound. Fear is always an aspect of new growth, and is represented here by the wolf, Baba Yaga's house (on chicken legs) and images of death in the background.

My work is an investigation of the human psyche, as relates to dreams, memory, and reverie. I am interested also in family systems--their various forms and definitions--using techniques that include layering, fragmentation and appropriation to undermine familiar narratives relating to socially accepted views of the family and its functions. I hope to raise questions on the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and other types of psychological scarring that may result from war, forced relocation, imprisonment and violent conflict; specifically, how these events may mutate or infect subsequent generations, shaping the psychological underpinnings of the family system, that serve as the motivating factors, conscious or unconscious, of the human psyche. .artist, ,
