ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My grandmother's house was built on a hill. Some generations lived in that house. At some point one of my ancestors wanted to add a room to the house. The new room was built with its floor placed in the middle of the wall of the old building, so the door which connected the rooms was also in the middle of the wall. Furthermore, both floors had an exit to the road as it was an incline. There was also storage rooms at different palces. The building was architecturally speaking a mess and its perception chaotic. I have connected that house with funeral rituals (such as a funeral cake), religious restrictions and taboos, together with a number of experiences with scorpions, one of them being found on my genital area. That was, according to my all too religious grandmother, a sign of the evil, since that night I slept on the same bed with my boyfriend, without being married to him. part of the collection "The Poetics of Space" {I have always been interested in spaces in dreams (rooms, labyrinths, passages etc) and my research lead me to Gaston Bachellard's "The poetics of Space". I found in that book many images, symbols and thoughts I had been using in my work and in my fantasies since I was a child. Shells, nests, connected rooms, caves and shelters are some of the spaces that inspire me.}

Andromachi Giannopoulou was born in Australia. She went to school in Athens, Greece, and studied Painting in Athens School of Fine Arts. She was awarded a scholarship for studies in Art and Design from the State Scholarship Foundation, and studied Graphic Design and Communication at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. She lives in Athens and works as an art teacher. Her work is the result of a search for the nature of personal experience, by exploring the boundaries between "real life" and memory and on the other hand between "real life" and dream. The border between sleep and alertness, repetitive dreams and space in dreams are some of the elements that fascinate her. It seems that all too often those images that emerge from the subconscious, revolve around a common axis which is the oppression of female sexuality. However she works without an obvious theme, letting the images and feelings reveal all those inevitable distortions of perception.
