ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I wanted more practice with faces and found classic, public domain photographs of children to work from. I have only drawn a few children, so I wanted more practice with that. This was my favorite, out of the photos I found. I referenced the photograph while drawing her. She takes me back to a past that existed before I was born. I see innocent girlhood, when I look at her, which is part of what makes her so charming. She is innocent and dream-like, with possibly a hint of Alice about her. But with those cat eyes, maybe a bit of Dinah in there, too. She looks like she is just on the tipping point between girlhood and womanhood. To me, she is sort of the poster child for that transition. I wanted to draw, as I much prefer it to painting.
