He Or She Print

Women and men look at the world from different perspectives. This is news to no one, but it took me a few decades to realize I saw everything upside down. (You may choose to hang this with the woman upside down, but I don't recommend it.) This brush drawing is from a few years ago, when I was very influenced by Max Beckman. Having worked in fine pen or graphite line for so long I had to study Beckman and Ludwig Bemelmans to learn how it was done, the trick of it, the liberties I could take. Instead of defining shapes with fine outline, the brushstrokes had their own shape and heft. It was much more muscular and assertive, more bravura. Working with a brush, the imperfect and distorted line became half the point, or the whole point.
