Art Description

Drawing: Digital, Ink, Pencil, Acrylic, Environmental on Paper, Other.

This is for sale as a print. There is a slight white border to allow for the dimensions of the original work.

Original work materials: Indigo, synthetic pigment, emperor rice dye, logwood/bloodwood dye, acrylic medium, pen, inkjet prints on rice paper, on paper.

The images I use as collage in my works are taken from still lives I build in my studio and allow to decompose. Images are overlapped with organic dyes such as bloodwood dye, black rice dye, matcha tea paste, indigo paste, wines and turmeric.

For more information on the unique process of these works, please see: https://maryajohnson.com/process/

Organic and synthetic materials, combined with digital images create a space in which it is difficult to determine what is what. Is that the guts of a fish, or the bitten inside of a peach? Is that paint, or the slowly cooked juices of a deep black rice, or wine, or blood?

The works are photographs and drawings and paintings. They are natural and synthetic. They are object and subject. The images are at once familiar and unfamiliar- experienced, seen, and thrust into the imagination.

If you wish to purchase an original work or print of a work you see on www.maryajohnson.com that you don't see here, please contact artist at: maryjohn@buffalo.edu
