Njabulo Magudulela is a Newcastle born artist currently based in Durban who is versatile but mainly focuses and works in portrait art. Njabulo is a self-taught fine artist who was recently mentored by Kenneth Shandu from the Durban University of Technology. After completing high school in 2015, Njabulo started to focus his time and skills on creative arts before enrolling for formal training in college for boiler making, this was when his love for creating artworks that aim to capture human faces and emotions developed as he would sketch his colleagues and mates during breaks or after extensive tasks. As the translation of his name Njabulo relates to happiness and joy, it is where he draws inspiration to draw faces or capture emotions. According to his philosophy the world revolves around human emotions and he took it upon himself to capture human emotions and expressions and make art or document them using whatever medium available. Previously Njabulo’s preferred mediums were graphite sketches on paper but has developed a love for drawing and painting on Kraft paper as he says that the is something about it that he can relate with. Amongst other experiments Njabulo has learned to create ceramics as well as printmaking.
