"Never the Words", 2015, pen and india ink with collaged book pages on 1/4 inch fiberboard panel, 12 inches wide by 16 inches tall (30 x 40 cm). Although the eyes may be the "mirror to the soul", the hands are often even more expressive. Pen and ink hatching is used to create tone and a sense of solidity, while a heavy outline preserves broader rhythms and gesture. Pages from damaged or weathered books are collaged into the negative space, reinforcing the idea of self-expression. The paper collage areas are sealed and varnished lightly with a UV-protectant finish to halt further weathering and discoloration, while the ink areas are left unvarnished. Note: These pieces owe a nod of thanks to Italian photographer Tina Modotti (1896-1942) who also explored the expressive potential of the image of the human hand.

United States
Born in Montgomery, Alabama, and raised in the rural Appalachian foothills of the northeastern part of the state, my childhood was surrounded by the natural world, the rigid social and cultural traditions of the deep South, the distant rumblings of 1960's social changes, and the panoramas of human existence revealed to me through reading, music and art. Most of my adult life has been spent working as a graphic designer in Birmingham, South Florida, and Dallas -- primarily in the television industry -- where I was immersed yet another hybrid universe, a fun-house world of ego, transitory celebrity, and social manipulation. These days I live and work in a cabin on the edge of the Ozark National Forest in northwest Arkansas, decompressing.
