ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Nina Simone was a highly influential singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, and civil rights activist. I have always loved her music, which eludes a certain strength mixed with sadness, expressed through her one of a kind, instantly recognizable voice. After watching the documentary, 'What Happened, Miss Simone?', I learnt more about her life, and struggles that she went through in her career and personal life. This provided more than enough inspiration to capture her essence in this portrait. This was created using charcoal and acrylic on Bristol paper, in January 2021.
