This hand drawn ink drawing of a Northern Pine Snake and Woolgrass was originally drawn for the Black Run Preserve Art & Photo Exhibition. The Black Run Preserve is a nature preserve in Evesham, New Jersey, USA. This exhibition of artwork and photos feature plants and animals that live on the preserve. The northern pine snake is an endangered species of snake that is native to the Black Run Preserve. Woolgrass also grows in the Black Run. Therefore I thought that they would make a great subject for this exhibition. The exhibition has unfortunately been postponed due to the virus. I love to draw lines which is why I decided to make an ink drawing. The blades of woolgrass and the scales on the snake as well as the markings on the scales makes a perfect ink drawing. Additionally, this ink drawing style does not compete with photography. This style and wildlife photos can co exist well in an exhibition. I drew this ink drawing on hot press illustration board. I hope that this drawing would make people think about habitat loss. Habitat loss from never ending construction is one of the biggest threats to reptiles, amphibians and animals in general. Once a forest or a meadow is built on, it's gone forever, along with the animals that lived there.

I am a wildlife artist who enjoys creating well drawn, detailed landscapes in gouache paint or pen & ink with an emphasis on fish or wetlands wildlife. When I was young, I spent most of my time outside in forests and fields. I was fortunate to grow up in a rural area that allowed me to explore lakes, streams and swamps and all manner of wildlife that lived there. For years I would study every type of animal I could find as well as the plants and trees that grew there. Although the rural countryside that I knew and love is disappearing, I travel as much as possible to see what is out there before it disappears forever. My goal is to create artwork that inspires conservation as well as the rural or country way of life. Concerning my art style, if I am painting, I prefer to draw with the brush. This requires watering the gouache paint down so that it is almost like ink. I also create wildlife art using pen & ink. Please visit my blog () to see how each of my paintings and ink drawings are created.
