I was born in Korea and am a portrait artist in Korea. My work is not simply drawing faces. I try to capture the person’s life and story, and convey the inner self realistically. The core of my paintings is realistic expression. I draw people’s expressions and eyes with delicate touches. I try to let their stories come out as they are. I was influenced by Diego Velazquez and the 19th century Impressionist painters. I got a lot of inspiration from their working methods. The medium I use is oil paint. The paint has good color development and is suitable for my work. In particular, I have experience painting an official portrait of the President of Korea. In that work, I did not simply paint a portrait of a person. I tried to portray the historical significance and social role of the President. I tried to express the story of his life with respect and longing. My work is unadorned and sincere. I hope that those who see the paintings can naturally connect with the characters. They feel emotions and understand the sincerity of the characters through realistic depictions. When you understand its depth, a portrait becomes more than just a picture; it becomes a window that tells a person’s life and history. My work is not just a ‘picture’. It is a story that contains a person’s existence, the traces he left behind, and the time we spent together. The people in my portraits are not traces of the past, but living, breathing beings in our memories.
