ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Portrait of Amanda is a pencil portrait that was completed in 2021. In 2021 and 2022, I returned to completing several pencil portraits after completing some oil paintings. I wanted to explore value progression and texture so I felt that focusing on drawing is always the best way to do that. I chose the model from a reference photo resource because of the position of her face turned over her shoulder. As well as the challenge of rendering her thick, wavy hair. This drawing would go on to inspire poet, Arthur Turfa, to coin is 2021 poem, The Muse With Closed Eyes. Both the drawing and poem were published in the February 2023 issue, Volume 2, of LIT eZine, a quarterly Literary and Poetry Magazine.

Artist’s statement: Above all, art is a never-ending process in which you learn something valuable with every creation that you bring forth. My first love has always been drawing. A pencil or pen is so pure and honest. There is an immediacy there that captivates me and satisfies me unlike any other art form. In the words of Camille Pissarro, “It is only by drawing often, drawing everything, drawing incessantly, that one fine day you discover to your surprise that you have rendered something in it’s true character.” Rebecca Chamberlain’s career as a fine artist and private art instructor began in 1995. She has taught workshops and classes in private studios, museums, libraries, arts organizations and educational cooperatives in Kentucky, Maryland, South Carolina, and Georgia. With a deep appreciation for Italian Renaissance, Symbolist, and Pre-Raphaelite art, her work is inspired by artists from these movements. She is also inspired by art from the Golden Age of Illustration, Botanical Studies, and Contemporary Realism. Rebecca’s subjects are primarily portraiture, figurative, and still life. She works in graphite, charcoal, Faber-Castell polychromos colored pencils, ink and oil. Her original works can be found in private collections throughout the United States. In 2010 five of her illustrations were published in the book, Bluegrass Drawing Society, and in 2014 she illustrated the children’s book, Jayden the Gentle, Tall and Gangly Giraffe, written by Lisa Farr Sharon. Rebecca wrote and illustrated the book, Maralee and the Turtles of the Sea, which was published in June of 2018.
