About The Artwork

'Safe Haven' is an original drawing in black ink on white watercolour paper. It shows a mouse, sleeping soundly, curled into a ball and enfolded in the protective curves of the leaves and stem of an ear of wheat. The drawing was inspired by my cat, Lolly, who often curls up to sleep on a chair in my studio while I work. The composition is very decorative, drawing the eye around the body of the mouse as if gently caressing it. The cross-hatching technique adds to the decorative effect, contributing a delicacy and elegance to the forms. Extreme meticulousness is needed when drawing in pen and ink - mistakes cannot be corrected and smudges or dirt can instantly spoil a picture. I find that I need complete concentration while working, as each stroke of cross hatching has to be carefully considered before it is committed to the page - its direction, length and strength can have drastic effects on the success of the composition. The drawing is in black ink on a 20cm x 20cm sheet of Hahnemule natural white, acid free, 300g/m2, hot pressed, watercolour paper. It is initialled in the lower right.

I am a British artist based in the western suburbs of Paris. Firmly rooted in medieval methods, I use aesthetic devices originally meant to glorify the church to make secular paintings conveying the wonder and power of the natural world and the ambiguity of man’s relationship with it. I fell in love with early Italian painting while living in Florence, and returned to the UK to study it in a masters degree at Oxford University. I then went on to train as a paintings conservator at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, Cambridge, where I became passionate about the materials and techniques of medieval European art and learned to gild and paint in hand-made egg tempera on wooden panels prepared with gesso. After many years researching these methods in theory and practice, culminating in the publication of my annotated translation of Cennino Cennini’s fifteenth century treatise on art, I began to develop my own artistic practice. My paintings, which have been sold to collectors world-wide, have been selected for numerous local salons and I was shortlisted for the New Emergence Art Prize in 2022.
