About The Artwork

Black and white ink on paper. Samhain is the Celtic celebration at the origin of the Halloween party. By convention it is currently attributed to the night between October 31st and November 1st. Originally it was celebrated several days, and its date was established through astronomical calculations as evidenced by the Calendar of Coligny, a calendar in the Gallic language dating back to the second century AD The night of Samhain indicated the beginning of the new Celtic year, the passage from warm season to winter, from 6 bright months to 6 darker months, between wakefulness and hibernation. It is therefore the transition from one agricultural year to another, transition between harvest and sowing for the following summer. Life and death were celebrated. For this reason, in a similar way the living celebrated the memory of their dead. It was thought that, at the time of transition from summer to winter (the seasons were considered essentially two according to the Celtic calendar), the Sidh - mounds where gods and heroes live - would open and the dead could walk among the living. Traditionally, food was left in front of one's home to greet the spirits and remember the deceased, to prevent unwelcome spirits from becoming angry with the hosts (Remember the custom of doing Trick or Treat on Halloween night, true ?) The original illustration has a white border around it for ease of framing. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ All images and text relating to this work on Saatchi Art are copyright © Elisabeth Turci. Born in Belgium and currently based out in Italy. I create paintings and illustrations with a dreamlike and surreal style inspired by symbolism, alchemy, folklore and mythology as well as fantastic and sci-fi literature. In my paintings there is a constant search for historical symbolism. I use the same conceptual approach with which I started as a published author before dedicating myself to painting. My intent is to explore the emotions, even the most difficult or dark, with a hint of kindness. Art is my way of elaborating them in order to grow, to face reality without forgetting to dream. My paintings has been featured in books, magazines and exhibited in art galleries in Europe and USA.
