Schiedam – 09-10-20 (sold) Stedelijk Museum Schiedam In 2018 I was visiting the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam with my parents to see the exhibition of art works by Jan Henderikse, a representative of the Dutch Zero group. Always a pleasure to be in Schiedam and especially in this museum; well renowned for its modern art. The old centre is a secret gem hidden amidst the urban area of Rotterdam in case you want to pay it a visit. Oude Sluis Near the museum at the Oude Sluis there is the Old Library of Schiedam (now De Korenbeurs) I drew back in 2016. Further down the road at the corner of the Nieuwe Sluisstraat and the Schie there is this lovely view across the canal towards the ‘Zakkendragershuisje’. I guess the scene couldn’t be more dutch than this, except for windmills. This week there was a lot of rain and so all my ambitions to go sketching outdoors went down the drain again so I used a picture I took when visiting the museum. Water Reflections Water reflections are always rewarding because the main motif (houses in this case) is doubled and therefor water is suggested. Who understands this cryptic description can depict water. I was quite fond of my pinks and purples in my previouw drawing ‘Beek-Ubbergen – 01-10-20’ and so I used them once again. The squares and rectangles of houses were much more difficult to capture with my hatched strokes technique. It is almost impossible to draw windows and rabbets but this forced me to abstract the view impressionistically. Thus, the focus in this drawing lies more on the play of light, fractured and scattered in complex color relations, than the scenery itself. Colored pencil drawing on Talens Mixed Toned Color paper (21 x 29.5 x 0.1 cm) - A4 format) Artist: Corné Akkers

1969, born in Nijmegen. My work can be seen in many countries all over the world. Corné employs a variety of styles that all have one thing in common: the ever search for the light on phenomena and all the shadows and light planes they block in. His favorites in doing so are oil paint, dry pastel and graphite pencil. He states that it’s not the form or the theme that counts but the way planes of certain tonal quality vary and block in the lights. Colours are relatively unimportant and can take on whatever scheme. It’s the tonal quality that is ever present in his work, creating the illusion of depth and mass on a flat 2d-plane. Corné combines figurative work with the search for abstraction because neither in extremo can provide the desired art statement the public expects from an artist. Besides all that, exaggeration and deviation is the standard and results in a typical use of a strong colour scheme and a hugh tonal bandwith, in order to create art that, when the canvas or paper would be torn into pieces, in essence still would be recognizable.
