About The Artwork

~Sisyphus~ Ink on paper, 8x10 inch This piece was completed with ink and pen on toned 'Strathmore' paper, and evaluates the concept that modern marketing and gimmicks are more of a burden than they are helpful. The piece is called 'Sisyphus' after the infamous Greek king who was eternally punished in the Underworld as atonement for his self-aggrandizing acts and deceitfulness. Classical interpretations of Sisyphus' punishment were he was doomed to forever roll a large boulder up a hill, only for it to roll down the other side and require him to push it back up again. The message behind this piece is that adhering to the fads of modern health and cosmetics is a truly sisyphean task; no amount of vanity can save us from our fates.

My name is Michael Nicholson, and I am a 21 year old artist from Adelaide, Australia. I have been painting for around 5 years, without any formal training. I attended secondary school at St. Peter's College, and am finishing degrees in Law and Media at the University of Adelaide. Because I have had no institutional training, my art remains quite experimental, both within individual pieces, but also across my portfolio as a whole. I draw inspiration from the beautiful Australian landscape, but also from many other artists. My favourites include Andrew Salgado, Casey Baugh, Francoise Nielly, Ben Quilty and Thomas Moran. If you have any inquiries please feel free to message me, or comment on any of my pieces. Thanks, I hope you enjoy my work!
