ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is the first of a three-part series (2019-2020) - Land, Water, and Sky. Much of my work is considered pop surrealism and has been done on a much smaller scale. I wanted to challenge myself with larger graphite pieces and explore further into scientific illustration. Like many, my first days as a plant mom began by collecting cacti. The kind this one in particular is based on is called the gymnocalycium. Its spines always reminded me of white spiders, ready to pounce or crawl away at any moment. When it flowers, it looks a bit alien - the flowers, its eyes. I think it a charming little daydream. The title of the piece is inspired by a friend who sees a snail or a turtle as its silhouette.
