ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Spiritualism has deep roots in Yosemite. Yosemite's first people told many stories of the Yosemite spirits. In 1985 after studying the history of Yosemite, I became enamored with the stories. Galen Clark Yosemite's first guardian was a spiritualist. I myself giving tours try to bring back to life the spirit of great people in Yosemite's history like John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt. In in 1985 I let my mind wander to the other side so to speak and made a series of drawing of Yosemite's spirits. This Halloween I have decided to display four of these never before seen by the public drawings. In this first of the series our spirit is standing by the portal to the rock spirits and looking back to Sentinel Rock where other spirit portals lie. She sees what you will all see in this series of drawings. There are four in total this is the first titled "Looking Back."

I work in Yosemite National Park as a tour guide. I have worked in Yosemite for over 30 years. My artwork is inextricably tied to my Yosemite Geography and my ecological message. I am a plein air painter, print maker, and photographer. I also write and illustrate my own books. I am the author of "A Brief Instruction in Christian Religion," (A translation of Faustus Socinus), "The Chronicles of the Field Mouse Timothy," (Corn,Tomato,Wheat, Cotton, Sweet Potatoes, Rice Paddy, Pond Mouse and Yosemite), "Nature Vision" (Poems), and I have illustrated the short stories of my late daughter Sandra Fontana "Cereal at Midnight." I love nature and the wilderness. I am a proponent of the global national parks movement.
